Questionnaire Survey on Possible Oral Dryness for Comparisons among Three Α1-adrenergic Receptor Antagonists (naftopidil vs. Tamsulosin

چکیده
Hypothesis / aims of study It is clinically known that anticholinergic agents, commonly used for treating overactive bladder, etc., act on the muscarinic receptor in salivary glands, causing dry mouth as an adverse effect. Not only the muscarinic receptor but also the α1-adrenergic receptor are present in human salivary glands, and are thought to accelerate saliva production. The common adverse events associated with α1-adrenergic receptor antagonists include orthostatic hypotension and dizziness. However, clinical research focusing on the association between α1-adrenergic receptor antagonists and oral dryness is very limited. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study on current oral dryness using a questionnaire in patients prescribed an oral α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Naftopidil for the treatment of urinary symptoms in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia
Naftopidil, approved only in Japan, is an α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist (α1-blocker) used to treat lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Different from tamsulosin hydrochloride and silodosin, in that it has higher and extremely higher affinity respectively, for the α1A-adrenergic receptor subtype than for the α1D type, naftopidil has distinct ...
متن کاملEffects of Combination Treatment of Alpha 1-Adrenergic Receptor Antagonists on Voiding Dysfunction: Study on Target Organs in Overactive Bladder Rats
PURPOSE Overactive bladder (OAB) causes urinary urgency, usually accompanied by frequency and nocturia. Alpha 1-adrenergic receptor (α1-AR) antagonists are known to improve lower urinary tract symptoms associated with OAB. The α1-AR antagonists constitute a variety of drugs according to the receptor subtype affinity. This study investigated the efficacy of tamsulosin, naftopidil, and a combinat...
متن کاملEffects of Spinal and Peripheral Injection of α1A or α1D Adrenoceptor Antagonists on Bladder Activity in Rat Models with or without Bladder Outlet Obstruction
PURPOSE Antagonists of α1-adrenergic receptors (α1ARs) relax prostate smooth muscle and relieve voiding and storage symptoms. Recently, increased expression of α1ARs with change of its subtype expression has been proved in bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). To search for the evidence of changes in α1ARs subtype expression and activity in the peripheral and spinal routes, the effects of spinal an...

متن کاملAdd-on Therapy With the α-Blockers Tamsulosin and Naftopidil Improves Voiding Function by Enhancing Neuronal Activity in Prostatic Hyperplasia Rats
PURPOSE Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) impacts quality of life in men by causing lower urinary tract symptoms. α1-Adrenoceptor (α1-AR) blockers improve lower urinary tract symptoms. We investigated the efficacy of add-on therapy with α1-AR blockers on BPH rats. METHODS Rats in the drug-treated groups were orally administered each drug once a day for 30 days after orchiectomy. To induce BP...
